The Armenian Tribute
Bitlis. Turkish Kurdistan.
2010
Performance. Video. Photography.
Armenian Tribute dignifies and remembers the victims of the Armenian genocide (1915-1917) as an act of remembrance and protest against the Turkish government's systematic denial of the killing of 1.2 million Armenians in the context of the 1st World War. Marc Sellarès travelled to the town of Bitlis, in the heart of Kurdistan under Turkish rule, to carry out this action. The artist buries candles underground as the antithesis of official memorials.
The action involved the registration and arrest of the artist by Turkish police during 2 hours.
