The Armenian Homage (2012)L’homenatge armeni (2012)

After visiting the Nazi concentration camp of Mathausen (in Austria) at the end of the 90s, I learned of the existence of the Armenian genocide. Subsequently my thoughts and attentions shifted towards an interest in learning and discovering more about the barbarism that in part inspired the dreadful acts committed by Hitler. The majority of the million and a half Armenian victims assassinated by the Ottoman empire between the end of the XIX century and 1915 were hung, or their death a result of exhaustion on long marches over the desert mountains. A few months ago I went to the heart of Turkish ruled Kurdistan where I performed a small action in homage to the victims of this genocide, who are not recognized by the Turkish state that denies their existence and persecutes whatever discrepancy with the official state version of events. In homage to the victims of genocide and massacres the flames of permanently lit torches or candles are a symbolic element that keeps the memory of these victims alive. Here the prohibition of such a homage required it to be hidden underground as a symbol and denouncement of this denial. Living Borders The preservation of an endangered animal species awakens the compassion of the majority of the planet’s governments, however there are those countries that remain indifferent to the destruction of many of the planet’s cultures. It is of great importance to preserve the distinct cultures of the planet, many of which possess a language and culture all their own, as well as an understanding of their surroundings based on observations from over thousands of years of inhabiting the same regions. The occidental culture based in commerce and money destroys these cultures because of objectives purely based in capital. armeni1armeni2
